Going forward this year, you might just feel the pain as a glut of releases hit us. This is in addition to the multiple announcements made last week just to keep the perpetual cycle going. It's quite a contrast to how things seemed a few months ago.
Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 42 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
First, as mentioned a couple of weeks ago, a more proper edition of The Green Mile, albeit an import from Zavvi UK. I wish that when Warner Bros. experimented with gift sets in the U.S. that they offered sets like this one, I guarantee they would have sold well.
Now on to domestic release Tuesday.
The new release of the week is The Matrix Resurrections. Offered up as a standard edition release and as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook with a somewhat bland cover art. Some of the overseas covers are much nicer in my opinion. You can also get all four movies in one collection as well, they're dubbing this one The Matrix 4 Film Deja Vu Collection.
On to catalog releases next. From Universal Pictures, Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture get a standard release and a SteelBook release.
Synapse Films is releasing the next Dario Argento 'fat pack' release, this time Phenomena, this is a Arrow Video partner release.
Last but not least, from Kino Lorber, Touch of Evil gets a 'must own' release.
There's a fair amount of titles to look at this week for the blu-ray format. Getting the blu-ray counterparts of the above releases first, The Matrix Resurrections gets a standard edition release and a Target Exclusive edition. Additionally, the The Matrix 4 Film Deja Vu Collection also gets a blu-ray edition. Also from Kino Lorber, Touch of Evil in a 3-disc blu-ray edition.
Warner Bros this week gives us Adventure Time: Distant Lands, a collection of four specials. More TV on disc, Supergirl: The Complete Sixth and Final Season and Supergirl: The Complete Series are both available on Tuesday.
From Sony Pictures, 2011 drama Courageous Legacy and 2021 drama A Journal for Jordan.
Vertical Entertainment brings us American Siege.
From Universal Studios, Golden Globe Award-winning Brooklyn Nine-Nine: The Complete Series comes to 17-disc blu-ray. Also, the 2021 sports/drama film National Champions and 2022 drama/romance Redeeming Love both get blu-ray releases.
From Amazon Studios via Paramount Home Entertainment, Coming 2 America get a blu-ray only release, even though it was in 4K on Amazon. Paramount also brings us Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius and The Rugrats Trilogy Movie Collection to disc.
From Criterion Collection, a Hungarian drama titled Adoption.
Anime highlight (singular) includes Broken Blade - Complete Film Series.
Honorable mention: Film Detective is bringing us Monster From Green Hell, a memorable 1957 sci-fi schlock film.
There were a ton of announcements last week for upcoming releases. If we covered them all this article would be quite lengthy.
Warner Bros. has announced that Singin' In The Rain is getting a 4K release on April 26th. The U.S. release is pretty basic while releases overseas include a book and other swag, even a SteelBook edition.
The Paramount Presents label is getting its first 4K release with The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, with a street date of May 17th. I still never understood the thinking of the dual Days of Thunder release, the 4K standard release and the Paramount Presents blu-ray on the same day.
Scream Factory's May 4K titles include Escape From New York, Lifeforce, The Craft and Candyman (1992) Collector's Editions.
Arrow Video's May releases include several different options for Wild Things, both blu-ray and 4K, as well as a fat-pack for Candyman (1992) in the UK.
Candyman again, if you feel the need for a Turbine Media Book instead, they've got that too, but it would appear that their version does NOT have Atmos sound like Arrow and Scream Factory's.
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
One of the most beloved films ever to hit the silver screen will be celebrating its 70th anniversary on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on April 26.

What, did you think the studios and boutique labels would take the month off just because we had a stacked February with an intensely busy April and May release frame coming?
Considering everything that's coming our way in the next few months, the one good thing we can say is that March is relatively light. There are some great catalog titles coming along with a few new releases with quite a few long-awaited favorites. We get a mix of new and old. Werewolves and Keanu Reeves. Italian Mobsters and Russian Mobsters. And while this month might be on the light side, doesn't mean it'll be cheap! With that - let's get into it:
Just because it's Fat Tuesday doesn't mean the month has a lot to indulge in. In fact, there's only one release and it's a repackage of discs that are already available.
Things pick up a little bit this month with a return to The Matrix leading the pack with Downton Abbey getting an upgrade just before the second film hits theaters, and another Argento film slips onto 2160p.
March 15th, 2022 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases
Well, of all the days for the knives to come out for your wallet - this is historically fitting! Between multiple classics reaching 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray thanks to KLSC, Criterion, Arrow, and Scream Factory all have new releases on top of Paramount dropping a couple with Disney/20th Century Studios doing a full-court press for Spielberg's latest Oscar contender.
There is just nothing good coming out this month. Nope. Not a thing.
And as quietly as March started, it goes out on a pretty soft note. But between a legendary concert film and a popular kid's flick, there's still some good stuff worth checking out.
And that just about does it. As always, release dates can change and if that happens we'll update our listings and this article as soon as we can. Scouring around the international releases, the only notable title we'll be covering is The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 4K SteelBook from Turbine Media Group - but that doesn't street until the end of the month and customs can be a little dodgy delaying delivery, so we'll get to it when we can as soon as we can.
Once again - thank you for your pre-orders. They really do go a long way towards keeping our little corner of the interwebs alive and going.
Thanks to Amazon, horror and sci-fi fans got to take an early gander at Scream Factory's thus far unofficially announced May 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray lineup!
While Scream Factory has yet to comment - and we expect them to formally announce soon enough - Amazon has listings for new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Collector's Editions ofJohn Carpenter's Escape From New York, Bernard Rose's Candyman, Andrew Fleming's The Craft, and Tobe Hooper's Lifeforce.
I'm not at all surprised with the Candyman news - after Friday's spur of Arrow and Turbine Media Group announcements for the title, it's a no-brainer that Scream Factory is dropping theirs nearly the same time. Escape From New York was already released in the E.U. markets by Studio Canal so that's more of a question of a "when" and not an "if" Scream would update their release. But the welcome surprises on this list is Tobe Hooper's nutso sci-fi horror flick Lifeforce and The Craft.
Lifeforce was a title I'd heard grumblings about a 4K release for a couple of years now so it's nice to see a rumor become a reality. Of the four listings, Lifeforce and The Craft are the only ones actually up for pre-order albeit at the egregiously high not-yet-on-sale price point. Now we don't have final specs for any of these as of yet, but with everything breaking so quickly, expect final details in the next day or two and when they come in we'll update this article and our listings accordingly.
[UPDATE]
Scream Factory is now posting up the official announcements for each of these. As they come in, we'll be updating each title with the full list of specs and bonus features if listed.
DISC ONE (4K UHD — THEATRICAL & UNRATED CUTS)
DISC TWO (BLU-RAY — THEATRICAL CUT)
DISC THREE (BLU-RAY — UNRATED CUT)
DISC ONE (4K UHD):
DISC TWO (BLU-RAY):
And with that, that is all the news that's fit to print, for the moment. Obviously, this is a developing story so as details come in we'll be updating listings and informing you cool kids about all the happenings and goings-on round these here parts.
As we transition from February and in to March, what are we most looking forward to in the near future? How will March Madness be this year? Will this year be the year a favorite title comes out on blu-ray/4K disc?
Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 41 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
What an easy week it is to list 4K releases. There is one single title available, that being James Bond: The Daniel Craig Collection. This collection is similar to the previous release, but it adds Craig's final (fifth) Bond movie No Time To Die to the set. I had held the 4-movie collection in my hands in the past in a moment of weakness, for once I am glad I held off. Will an all-inclusive box set of all Bond films in 4K come next? Never say never, but I kind of doubt it.
Also a rather slow week for blu-ray releases. There is no blu-ray counterpart to the above release, so let's just move on to other titles.
From Universal, 2021's drama Belfast. This one touts an acclaimed ensemble cast and acclaimed director, and it did rate pretty good on the various review sites.
Delayed at least once but now on track for release, The Batman: The Complete Series (animated) comes to us via Warner Bros.
If you've been keeping up with director Neill Blomkamp (District 9), his latest release Demonic comes via RLJ Entertainment.
Anime highlights include Dropout Idol Fruit Tart, Is the Order a Rabbit? BLOOM (Season 3) and Naruto: Set 6.
Honorable Mention: A foreign WWII film titled The Pilot: A Battle for Survival comes via Well Go USA. It has an English dub if that is a deciding factor.
This week you can buy the Imprint Films February slate on Friday.
>The Odd Couple Collection - Imprint Films L
Amazon.com order links for West Side Story (2021) appear to be live. Also added to the mix, a Target Exclusive 4K edition as well. Check out our news release here for all the options and order links.
LionsGate has announced blu-ray releases for The Exorcism of God and The Humans with an April 19th street date.
Kino Lorber has announced 4K editions of The Manchurian Candidate and The Untouchables are being worked on, expect to see them sometime in the second quarter. Again, previous Criterion blu-rays now getting the Kino 4K treatment. Hey, that's fine by me, Kino does a great job too!
Beverly Hills Cop II appears to be on track for a 4K disc release on May 17th, awaiting official word from the studio.
Sony's Uncharted is available for preorder, thus far blu-ray, 4K and 4K SteelBooks are in the mix, street date likely in May or June.
Warner Archive Collection will be releasing a pair of Kevin Costner titles on April 12th, they are Fandango and American Flyers.
Arrow Video's next batch includes a couple if good titles. Highlights include multiple ediitons of Wild Things 4K and blu-ray, as well as a UK release for Candyman (1992) in 4K. See our article here for the full slate.
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
Arrow has revealed its May release slate with Wild Things getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray upgrade.
The 4K format will see John McNaughton's Wild Things (Limited Edition SteelBook) - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray starring Matt Dillon, Denise Richards, Kevin Bacon, and Neve Campbell on May 24. There will also be a Deluxe Limited Edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray and another 4K Limited Edition that includes a SteelBook.
A spoiled rich kid, a troubled teen from the wrong side of the tracks, a carefree playboy and a dogged detective find themselves all caught up in the sex crime of the century in this steamy star-studded crime thriller from the director of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
Popular and charming, student counsellor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) is no stranger to being the focus of female attention within the moneyed cliques of Florida’s Blue Bay. His fortunes are about to change dramatically, however, when one of the wealthiest students at his high school, sultry siren Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards), accuses him of rape. The charge looks sure to stick when another girl from the other end of the social spectrum, Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell), steps forward with her own allegations, but Detective Duquette (Kevin Bacon) smells something fishy, and the truth is as murky and dangerous as the alligator-infested swamps in the hinterlands of this affluent beach community.
Presented in new 4K restorations of its original theatrical version and extended ‘Unrated Edition’, Wild Things is a classic piece of sexy late-90s neo-noir from director John McNaughton and writer Stephen Peters, whose serpentine plotting will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end credits roll.
4K UHD BLU-RAY LIMITED EDITION STEELBOOK FEATURES
Also in 4K but in the UK only is Candyman (Limited Edition) - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray starring Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen on May 23.
Dare you say his name five times? From the chilling imagination of horror master Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Nightbreed) comes Candyman – one of the greatest horror movies of the ‘90s, now newly restored on 4K UHD from Arrow Video.
When grad student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) begins working on a thesis about urban legends, she comes across the terrifying tale of the Candyman – a vengeful, hook-handed spirit who can be summoned by saying his name five times in the mirror. As her research leads her into the bowels of Chicago’s deprived housing projects and deeper into the Candyman’s world, Helen learns that some legends are best left well alone.
Expertly directed by British filmmaker Bernard Rose (Paperhouse) and boasting an astounding score by composer Philip Glass, Candyman ingeniously reworks Clive Barker’s original short story “The Forbidden” (originally published as part of his groundbreaking Books of Blood series) into a modern horror parable that remains as timely today as ever.
4K LIMITED EDITION FEATURES
Next, on Blu-ray we have Girls Nite Out on May 16. There will also be an exclusive with "The Scaremaker" O-Card).
A host of familiar genre faces including Hal Holbrook (Creepshow), Rutanya Alda (Amityville II: The Possession), Julia Montgomery (The Kindred) and Lauren-Marie Taylor (Friday the 13th Part 2) rounds out the cast of this gloriously mean-spirited slice from the slasher golden age, Girls Nite Out!
The students of DeWitt University are preparing themselves for a night of fun and frolics in the form of an all-night scavenger hunt. Little do they know that they are in fact the ones being hunted… An unhinged assailant, disguised in the college’s goofy bear mascot outfit – and bearing knives for claws, two years before Freddy donned his famous gloves – is stalking the campus hellbent on carving up co-eds.
Originally released under the only marginally more appropriate title of The Scaremaker, Girls Nite Out is a decidedly singular slasher flick which comes on like a frenetic cross between Animal House and Friday the 13th – veering from jovial frat antics to jarringly disturbing scenes of the killer shrieking obscenities as he slices up his victims. On this nite out, no one is coming home!
BLU-RAY FEATURES
FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Michael Gingold
On the 24th comes the kickass classic from “Jimmy” Wang Yu One Armed Boxer .
When former Shaw Brothers executive Raymond Chow founded rival studio Golden Harvest in 1970, he quickly teamed up with “Jimmy” Wang Yu – Hong Kong’s first kung fu superstar and formerly Shaw’s biggest box office draw. Bringing over his peerless talent for taking on all foes with one hand tied behind his back, Wang wrote, directed and played the title role in one of his most unmissable kickass classics. From the legendary star of One-Armed Swordsman and The Chinese Boxer comes… One-Armed Boxer!
Yu Tian Long (Wang) is the best fighter to come out of his local martial arts school, but when he crosses the ruthless leader of a local crime syndicate, the big boss’ brutal bevy of deadly killers make mincemeat out of the school and everyone inside. Now the only survivor of the massacre, and short of one appendage, Yu is gifted a powerful elixir that promises to give him the strength to take swift revenge on the army of assassins, each representing the most lethal forms of fighting from across the Eastern hemisphere.
Proving once and for all that you only need five fingers of death to get the job done, Wang would later reprise his role in the infamous sequel Master of the Flying Guillotine, but it’s the dementedly inventive original where he’s arguably at the height of his powers.
BLU-RAY EDITION CONTENTS
FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by Simon Abrams
On the 30th (UK only), Gaspar Noé's Lux Aeterna starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Béatrice Dalle will have a Blu-ray release.
Gaspar Noé, the arch provocateur of New French Extremity responsible for Irreversible and Enter the Void, blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction in Lux Æterna, his ode to the suffering and sacrifices involved in the creation of art.
French cinema icons Charlotte Gainsbourg (Ismael’s Ghosts, Antichrist) and Béatrice Dalle (Betty Blue, Inside), playing themselves, star as the lead actress and the director of an experimental film about witches. But as preparations for the shoot get underway, the increasingly chaotic production slowly unravels as egos and bitter resentments rise to the surface, threatening to derail the entire enterprise.
Shot over just five days and largely improvised by the superlative cast, Lux Æterna is a powerful, hypnotic assault on the senses like no other, cementing Noé’s position as one of the most incendiary voices in cinema today.
BLU-RAY FEATURES
Finally, Gaspar Noé's Enter the Void[UK Import] will be released on Blu-ray on the same date.
Eight years after the controversial and shocking Irreversible, director Gaspar Noé cemented his reputation as the enfant terrible of New French Extremity with perhaps his most challenging film to date – a hallucinatory meditation on life, death and rebirth, shot entirely in the first person.
American siblings Oscar (Nathaniel Brown) and Linda (Paz de la Huerta, The Limits of Control) eke out a shared existence in Tokyo – he by dealing drugs, she by working as a stripper. However, tragedy strikes when a deal turns sour and Oscar is shot by the police. As his lifeless body lies on the floor of a public toilet, his soul floats high above the neon-drenched Tokyo streets, observing the effect of his death on his sister and reliving the events in his life that brought him to this juncture.
Described by Noé himself as a “psychedelic melodrama”, Enter the Void boasts mesmerising cinematography by the award-winning Benoît Debie (Climax, Spring Breakers) and a hypnotic soundtrack of experimental and electronic music. Powerful and transcendent, it offers viewers an immersive cinematic experience like no other.
LIMITED EDITION BLU-RAY FEATURES
We will post pre-order links when they are available as usual.
Clive Barker's tale of love, tragedy, and visceral gore calls out for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with three new Mediabook Limited Editions from Turbine Media Group on May 23rd, 2022!
Directed by Bernard Rose and starring Virginia Madsen and the now-iconic Tony Todd, Candyman was a diabolically twisted and unnerving piece of modern gothic horror. With three additional sequels, the original remains the best film of the series. Not a single frame is wasted in this terrifying film. And now we get to enjoy it in full native 4K with Dolby Vision HDR (and HDR10)! And true to form, the good folks over at Turbine Media Group are giving fans three different covers to chose from.
Limited to 1000 Copies
Limited to 666 Copies
Limited to 333 Copies
All are pretty slick and I dig Turbine's original artwork and the Original Theatrical artwork design for Cover B, but I have to tip my hat to the far more limited Cover C. I love that mirrored poster art. I once had the chance to pick up an original poster of that artwork in excellent condition at a convention and I hemmed and hawed debating far too long and it got bought out from under me. So that's probably the route I'm going for with this release.
Now, we do expect this one to come out on this side of the pond at some point, but when and where is always a question. It could get announced today for all we know. BUT for now - this is a pretty exciting release. So far I have yet to be disappointed by a Turbine disc release. Now, in their specs they say "Unrated" cut which doesn't run longer just has alternate gore footage that plays a little different than the U.S. release.
Which one are you grabbing for? Here are the full specs for these Candyman sets:
We dared to say "Candyman in 4K" five times... Now it's coming true:
CANDYMAN appears on Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time! UNRATED, of course. With brand new 4K restoration from the original negative as well as HDR and Dolby Vision . The milestone of the horror genre, about which not many words need to be lost, is available from May 23rd in three limited media books with UHD, Blu-ray (with film and tons of bonus) and a 24-page book section with a text by Tobias Hohmann. Cover A – unmistakably penned by Timo Wuerz – is limited to 1,000 pieces, cover B to 666 pieces and cover C (the mirrored motif is based on the cinema poster of the time) to just 333 pieces.
The advance sale starts now exclusively in the Turbine Shop.
The record-breaking blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Benedict Cumberbatch will arrive on Digital platforms on March 22 and will be available on physical 4K/Blu-rays April 12.
