The last week of August is upon us. Where has the Summer gone?
Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 14 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/Digital Releases-
For 4K releases, there are two new releases and two catalog titles.
The Covid delayed title Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway comes to 4K disc from Sony Pictures. I recall one of the movie posters using the word 'finally!' when referring to the theatrical release date. I had imported the first movie over a matter of cover art preference, at least this one isn't terrible, albeit a bit YELLOW.
The next movie has been retitled for marketing purposes, Warner Bros releases The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It. It originally was not named Conjuring 3 in case you were wondering. Hope this means the first two will see a 4K upgrade as well. Again, I imported the first one on blu-ray as a SteelBook, it had a much nicer cover art.
If you enjoyed Arrow's 4K release of The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, or are a completionist, Dario Argento's follow up titled The Cat o' Nine Tails sees 4K disc, offered as another one of those releases I like to refer to as a 'fat pack.' This one is loaded with all the extras we have come to expect and enjoy from a 'fat pack' release.
And the final 4K disc of the week from Blue Underground is titled Two Evil Eyes.
Thus far Arrow Video and Blue Underground have done phenomenal work on their 4K releases.
HD Blu-ray/Digital releases-
Getting the blu-ray versions out of the way first, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It are available if 4K is not for you. Franchise releases of Peter Rabbit and The Conjuring are also being offered on blu-ray.
Criterion Collection this week, look for Ashes and Diamonds, a Polish Drama/War film that I will not even pretend to know or explain. You can be sure that Criterion put as much care and effort on this one as they do on all their releases.
The Oh, God! Collection from Shout Select marks the first time you can get all three releases on Blu-ray, and as a single SKU package to boot.
Also from Arrow Video this week, horror master Yasuzô Masumura brings us Blind Beast.
From LionsGate this week, look for Habit, a film that at first seemed like a meh, but after watching a few extended previews, looks like a lot of fun. Then there's Lansky, a bio/crime film starring Sam Worthington and Harvey Keitel.
For animated/anime releases, the highlights are Dreambuilders, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Season 3, Naruto: Set 4 and Show By Rock!! Mashumairesh!! - Season Three.
Warner Archives releases this week include Prince of the City and Prodigal Son: The Complete Second Season.
Honorable Mention -- this week Severin is releasing a lot of forgotten films, but I think the movie Overboard (Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell) is a first time that breaks from the norm of their horror releases and brings us something a little bit lighter.
Friday releases include the usual music/arts releases. The Imprint releases that were due this week were pushed back four weeks, most likely related to production issues. (Amazon lists them as September 3rd, but Imprint's site itself says September 15th.)
Notable announcements from last week:
More information about Criterion's November releases has come out including which 4Ks and when. Check out the article for details!
Multiple October titles have been revealed from the various Shout! Factory labels. They include Coppelia, Deadly Friend, Don Knotts: 5-Film Collection, Killer Party, A Letter to Momo, Liam Neeson Double Feature, Little Vampire, Martial Arts Double Feature, Nothing But Trouble, Shirobako: The Movie, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Six Minutes to Midnight.
Discotek's October batch so far includes City Hunter: The Complete First Series, Hajime No Ippo The Fighting! TV Series Collection 3, Lupin the 3rd Part V: Misadventures in France, Sgt. Frog: The Complete First Season and Shaman King.
Disney will be releasing Who Framed Roger Rabbit on 4K disc, a standard edition and an overly YELLOW Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. Find out who framed the rabbit on December 7th (tentatively.)
StudioCanal UK has announced a 40th Anniversary Edition 4K release of The Howling. Much like they did with the John Carpenter releases, they will release a fat-pack release and a SteelBook release. Both releases are expected October 25th. If you don't want to import, we can hope that Shout Factory gets around to it in the next year or so. Maybe they can at least confirm it is in the works, even if they don't offer an exact date.
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
Happy 40th Birthday The Howling! Coming to 4K UHD Blu-ray
One of the greatest werewolf movies of the 80s - Joe Dante's classic The Howling celebrates its 40th Anniversary by coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on October 25th From Studio Canal in the UK.
As of right now, there's no news of a domestic release on the horizon - but given how many movies are hitting 4K in the next two months there's plenty of time for a boutique label or studio to announce their domestic release of this classic werewolf flick.
Studio Canal is offering up their big three-disc deluxe box set and a slick classy SteelBook from Zavvi
We don't have full tech specs on hand but we've reached out to our Studio Canal reps for more information about transfer, HDR, and audio.
Bonus features are slated to include:
The Howling 40th Anniversary 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
The Howling 40th Anniversary - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Zavvi SteelBook
Again, as soon as we have full specs we'll update this article and our listings. ALSO - we'll be on the lookout for domestic retailer options as well. For right now, this looks to be another great UK import for those of us living in the states and Canada.
Once again - thank you for your preorders. They really do go a long way towards keeping our little operation going.

STUDIOCANAL Announces 4K Restoration of
Joe Dante’s Horror Classic
THE HOWLING
ON 4K UHD COLLECTORS EDITION, STEELBOOK, BLU-RAY, DVD AND DIGITAL 25 OCTOBER 2021
London – 19 August 2021 - To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Joe Dante’s horror classic THE HOWLING,
STUDIOCANAL is thrilled to announce a brand new 4K restoration of the 1981 contemporary tale of
timeless horror. Available on 4K Ultra HDTM, Blu-Ray, DVD and Steelbook editions from the 25th October
2021. Starring Dee Wallace (E.T), Patrick MacNee (THE AVENGERS) and Dennis Duggan
(PARENTHOOD), Dante’s classic satiric werewolf horror is an absolute must-see! Pre-order the Collectors
Edition here.
With THE HOWLING, director Joe Dante (GREMLINS, INNERSPACE) and screenwriter John Sayles (LONE
STAR, PASSION FISH) created a unique horror shocker loosely based on part one of author Gary
Brandner's trilogy of novels. The film took the genre of werewolf horror to a whole new level, with its dark
atmosphere, pointed irony and elaborately modelled special effects and make-up by Rob Bottin
(ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL). The film received a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film in 1980.
Commenting on the restoration, director Joe Dante said: “I can honestly say this 4K restoration is the best
The Howling has looked since it came out of the lab in 1980 - maybe better. I'm happy to have it back in
circulation at last.”
SYNOPSIS:
Karen West narrowly escapes death at a rendez-vous she has deliberately accepted with a murderer whose
name is Eddie. He is shot by the police. After this, the young woman begins to have nightmares and goes
to a therapy centre with her husband Roy. But instead of getting better, she gets worse and her relationship
with her husband deteriorates. When Roy is attacked by an unidentified animal, his personality and
behaviour begin to change...
ABOUT THE RELEASE
The 4K UHD Limited SteelBook Edition and the 4K UHD Collector’s Edition are released with exclusive new
artworks, offering bonus material including a new featurette about Joe Dante’s extensive career in
Hollywood and the documentary “Welcome to Werewolfland” including interviews and commentaries with
cast and crew.
Special Features include:
• NEW Featurette: Inside the Career of Joe Dante
• Documentary: Welcome to Werewolfland
• Deleted Scenes
• Outtakes
ABOUT THE RESTORATION
THE HOWLING was restored in 2021 by STUDIOCANAL with the VDM lab, under the supervision of Joe Dante.
This restoration project was conducted from start to finish in 4K with a 16-bit color depth bringing all the details
from the original negative to life.
The 4K 16-bit scan was made from the original 35mm negative. The image from the 1.20 negative was then
cropped to 1.85 in order to respect the original format of the film projection.
The film was calibrated in the P3-D65-ST2084 color space, with a 1000 nits screen. The calibration was based
on the reference of 35mm positive copies of the period as well as, for the video part, on the basis of existing
reference masters.
The restoration took a few hundred hours of meticulously filtering in order to correct the defects related to the
age of the film and to the wear of time.
STUDIOCANAL is proud to present THE HOWLING in DCP 4K, and a DOLBY VISION UHD HDR & SDR video
master, through a brand-new Prestige 4K edition.
THE HOWLING IS AVAILABLE ON 4K UHD COLLECTORS EDITION, STEELBOOK, BLU-RAY,
DVD AND DIGITAL 25 OCTOBER 2021
4K UHD COLLECTOR’S EDITION – 3 discs, Poster, Booklet & art cards
4K UHD STEELBOOK – 1 4K UHD disc & 1 Blu-ray disc
BLU-RAY EDITION – 1 Blu-ray disc
DVD EDITION – 1 DVD disc
Just in case you didn't pick this disc up already - or if you're a crazed SteelBook collector, Lionsgate is giving you a pretty slick reason to add American Psycho - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray to your collection!
and here's a look at the not so subtle back artwork:
Currently up for pre-order at Best Buy for $19.99 - this set looks to be the exact same discs and content as before, just all souped up with some fancy new packaging. Normally I don't leap for these SteelBook reissues if I already have the original, but I'm damn tempted to add this one. Lionsgate loves their plastic slipcovers and this new artwork is boss!
What do you think, worth grabbing again or worth getting for the first time just for the SteelBook art, or are you going to stick with the original release?
As always - thank you for your preorders, they go a long way towards keeping our little operation up and running.

Bring home the latest "family" film - F9: The Fast Saga Theatrical & Director's Cut on Blu-ray & 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray 9/21
We already knew this one was in the pipeline for some time, but Universal is finally making it official. Fans of the ever-expanding Accelerated and Vexed franchise have a few options to add this latest entry to their collections.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray will include Dolby Atmos audio along with HDR10 and HDR10+ grading for both the 02:22:41 Theatrical Cut and the 02:29:44 Director's Cut which presumably includes more mentions of the importance of "family" with Vin Diesel glowering at people. Disc looks to be a triple-layer BD-100 disc. A SteelBook for this one will also be floating around out there if you're into collecting those.
The 1080p SDR Blu-ray will also include both the Theatrical and Director's Cut of the film and also includes Dolby Atmos.

Thanks for your pre-orders - they really go a long way towards keeping our little operation up and running!
Classic 80s cartoons make for great toys but they don't always make for great movies based on said toys. In their latest attempt to make a live-action G.I. Joe movie, Paramount banked heavily one an origin story for one of the most popular characters with Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. Whether it was the lingering pandemic affecting theater attendance or just the simple fact people weren't keen on another Joe adventure - the film was hardly a flicker at the global box office leading to some doubt about any future Joe adventures. Still - I know a few G.I. Joe diehards that had a blast with it for just pure dumb fun action.
If this Nicolas Cage-free Snake Eyes is in your wheelhouse, you have a few options and all are up for pre-order:
A standard 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook
A G.I. Joe 3-Film 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Collection if you don't already own the first two films on 4K
and for you folks still rocking 1080p, there's going to be a standard SDR Blu-ray
and a standard SDR G.I. Joe 3-Film Collection Blu-ray Set
As always dates are subject to change, but this looks to be a firm release frame for this one. Thanks for your pre-orders, they go a long way towards helping to keep our little operation going.

Welcome to Volume 2 Episode 13 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming out this week on 4K disc and Blu-ray, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/Digital Releases-
After no releases last week (except for last minute import additions to the calendar) we return back to a normal flow.
New title first, this week look for Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, available as a standard edition release and as a (somewhat yuck) Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. You might like the cover or agree with me, to me I am scratching my head as I try to figure out what I am even looking at. Because the original movie (The Hitman's Bodyguard) did not get a SteelBook release, Best Buy has remedied that this week as well. The cover is a bit more traditional comic book style.
From Sony, Labyrinth is getting another release. This release has Dolby Vision HDR and is presented as a Digibook. I hope studios don't think we will regularly double-dip to upgrade the HDR. If you didn't buy the first release or are a fan of the movie, now might be the time.
SteelBooks seem to be dominating a lot of 4K releases lately, this time around, the first movie in the Wizarding World Collection, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone but with a more traditional cover art and at the moment, this release is the only way to experience the 'Magical Movie Mode' in 4K. Early specs indicated the audio track might be different as well, stay tuned for more info.
For an import Friday release, Lord of War as a SteelBook release, from Germany, just in case the standard domestic release isn't quite cutting it for you.
HD Blu-ray/Digital releases-
A rather slow(ish) week for Blu-ray releases, but there always seems to be something of interest for all.
Getting it out of the way early, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard gets a blu-ray/dvd combo release. Also from LionsGate this week, 2021 action/thriller Rogue Hostage. Under the Vestron Video Label, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat debuts on blu-ray this week.
Also getting another out of the way early, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Magical Movie Mode Edition) gets a blu-ray release. From The Warner Archive, In the Good Old Summertime as well as Shadow of the Thin Man.
Sony's archive/mod label brings us Bingo, Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation and The Truffle Hunters. Does this mean the original Care Bears movie is in the works somewhere?
Kino Lorber has a lot of well known star power classic releases this week, titles include The Emperor Waltz, Fitzwilly and The Fortune Cookie. In case you're keeping score, Bing Crosby, Dick Van Dyke, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
Criterion Collection's single title this week is Original Cast Album: "Company", described as 'the holy grail' of Broadway documentaries.
Anime highlight(s) of the week, DECA-DENCE - The Complete Season and Maria-Holic! Complete Collection.
Notable announcements from last week:
Perhaps the biggest announcement from last week is that Criterion will be releasing 4K discs from the Criterion Collection label. Thus far the titles slated are Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, The Piano, Mulholland Dr., The Red Shoes, and A Hard Day’s Night. The email from Criterion alludes to Citizen Kane being the first release, in November. We should see more information this week with their November title slate announcement. This leaves a small number of release houses that are not on board with 4K yet. Off the top of my head I don't recall Image Entertainment (RLJ), MVD and Anchor Bay doing any 4K discs.
Disney has announced the release of 2021's Cruella for release on September 21st. For 4K releases, expect a standard release, a Target Exclusive, Best Buy Exclusive and a Walmart Exclusive. For Blu-ray/DVD expect a standard release and a 2-movie release that includes the animated 101 Dalmatians.
Universal's archive/mod label has revealed their next batch of titles. They include American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules, Because of Him, Can't Help Singing, For the Love of Mary, Something in the Wind, State of the Union, The Woody Woodpecker: Screwball Collection and You Should Have Left. Looks like a lot of decent vintage features in that batch.
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, The Piano, Mulholland Dr., The Red Shoes, and A Hard Day’s Night is their opening salvo into 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray starting this November 2021
Sadly at this moment - that's ALL we know. We don't know HDR or if there will be HDR for all of the films - "select films" is a bit teasing - audio (some might get Atmos), disc specs or anything of the like. Criterion will be punching out a full announcement soon, this was just the teaser to blow our minds.
As if the close of 2021 wasn't already expensive, Criterion is finally jumping into the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray game. We'd heard rumblings about a couple of these titles, but we didn't expect a full slate of new additions to the collection! Until that full announcement hits, we'll just have to sit back and speculate about what Criterion is going to bring to make these releases special. When all of that info comes in, we'll update our listings and get that good stuff out to you folks.
What do you think of Criterion's first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray lineup? All winners? Or are you too tired to upgrade your collection?
[UPDATE 8/16]
We now have cover art and specs for Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, and Mulholland Dr. - click the links for full details - It looks like these three are the first ones to come with the other three arriving in December or later into 2022.

Here is the complete press release from Warner Bros. with all the juicy details:
SUPERMAN:
THE COMPLETE ANIMATED SERIES
BLU-RAY™/DIGITAL BOX SET
REMASTERED FOR 25TH ANNIVERSARY; COMING OCTOBER 12, 2021
FROM WARNER BROS. HOME ENTERTAINMENT
BURBANK, CA (August 10, 2021) Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Superman: The Animated Series with a fully remastered Blu-rayTM box set. Superman: The Complete Animated Series, which includes several hours of bonus features headlined by an all-new documentary detailing the creation of one of the most beloved animated Super Hero cartoons in history, will be available starting October 12, 2021.
Produced by Warner Bros. Animation (WBA), the Emmy Award-winning Superman: The Animated Series was the perfect follow-up to the landmark Batman: the Animated Series. Producers Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett elevated The Man of Steel’s animated presence with an imaginative, heartfelt look at Superman’s adventures in Metropolis alongside Lois Lane and opposite the villainous likes of Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Darkseid and more. Premiering on September 6, 1996, the series continued WBA’s dominance in Super Hero animation, once again setting new standards for storytelling, art direction and acting performances – and garnering 11 Emmy Award nominations and two Emmy Award wins, including top honors as the Outstanding Special Class Animated Program of 1998.
The remarkable Superman: The Complete Animated Series box set features more than 19 hours of entertainment spread over six Blu-ray™ discs, including all 54 exciting episodes, an all-new series-defining featurette entitled Superman: Timeless Icon, a special video commentary episode and three specially selected episodes with audio commentaries by the showrunners.
All 54 episodes have been remastered from the original 35mm Interpositive sources, giving special attention to extensive color correction, dirt and scratch clean up, and adding a grain reduction pass to create a pristine picture, all while making sure not to affect the original lines in the artwork of the animation. The audio was retransferred from the original audio masters, and the series is presented in its original aspect ratio (4x3).
The producing quartet of Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and Glen Murakami headed production of Superman: The Animated Series alongside executive producers Jean MacCurdy and Haven Alexander. Shirley Walker and the Dynamic Music Partners (Michael McCuistion, Lolita Ritmanis, Kristopher Carter) composed the award-winning score, while eight-time Emmy Award winning dialogue/casting director Andrea Romano guided a star-studded voice cast. Curt Geda and Dan Riba served as animation directors for more than half of the episodes.
The Superman: The Animated Series cast continued the unrivaled presentation of guest stars that Batman: The Animated Series had initially established. The lengthy cast list is filled with luminaries, their laurels including one Academy Award and 10 Oscar nominations; 37 Emmy Awards and 186 Emmy nominations; 16 Golden Globe Awards and 54 nominations; five Annie Awards and 38 nominations; four Grammy Awards and 14 nominations; and nine individuals honored with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, including Ed Asner, Mark Hamill, William H. Macy, Marion Ross, Malcolm McDowell, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Michael York, Roddy McDowall and Paul Williams.
Tim Daly (Madame Secretary, Private Practice, Wings) led the cast as Clark Kent and Superman alongside Dana Delany (Body of Proof, Desperate Housewives, China Beach) as Lois Lane, David Kaufman (Danny Phantom, Stuart Little) as Jimmy Olsen and Clancy Brown (Dexter, The Shawshank Redemption, SpongeBob SquarePants) as Lex Luthor. The star-studded cast included series regulars – and their characters – Lauren Tom (Angela Chen), Victor Brandt (Professor Hamilton), Corey Burton (Brainiac), Joseph Bologna (Dan Turpin), George Dzundza (Perry White), Brad Garrett (Bibbo Bibbowski), Shelley Fabares (Martha Kent), Joanna Cassidy (Maggie Sawyer), Lisa Edelstein (Mercy Graves), Mike Farrell (Jonathan Kent) and Michael Ironside (Darkseid).
Notable series guest stars featured Mark Hamill, Ed Asner, Dean Jones, Melissa Joan Hart, Robert Morse, Al Roker, Brian Cox, Jason Priestley, Peter Gallagher, David Warner, Michael Dorn, Christopher McDonald, Bruce Weitz, Andrea Martin, Miguel Ferrer, Ron Perlman, Bud Cort, Gilbert Gottfried, Robert Hays, Dennis Haysbert, Laraine Newman, Nancy Travis, Xander Berkeley, Jonathan Harris, John Glover, Sandra Bernhard, Jack Carter, Ernie Hudson, Henry Silva, and Robert Patrick.

Menaces of Metropolis: Behind the Villains of Superman (Featurette) – Your hero is only as good as the villains around him, and Superman: The Animated Series has a rogues’ gallery of top-grade baddies, including traditional opponents Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Bizarro, Metallo, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Toyman and Parasite, as well as new villains created for the series – like Live Wire and Luminus.
