The month's Blu-ray-only title is the romantic comedy The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye arriving on July 11.
The wry, incisive debut feature by Cheryl Dunye gave cinema something bracingly new and groundbreaking: a vibrant representation of Black lesbian identity by a Black lesbian filmmaker. Dunye stars as Cheryl, a video-store clerk and aspiring director whose interest in forgotten Black actresses leads her to investigate an obscure 1930s performer known as the Watermelon Woman, whose story proves to have surprising resonances with Cheryl’s own life as she navigates a new relationship with a white girlfriend (Guinevere Turner). Balancing breezy romantic comedy with a serious inquiry into the history of Black and queer women in Hollywood, The Watermelon Woman slyly rewrites long-standing constructions of race and sexuality on-screen, introducing an important voice in American cinema.

There was before Breathless, and there was after Breathless. Jean-Luc Godard burst onto the film scene in 1960 with this jazzy, free-form, and sexy homage to the American film genres that inspired him as a writer for Cahiers du cinéma. With its lack of polish, surplus of attitude, anything-goes crime narrative, and effervescent young stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, Breathless helped launch the French New Wave and ensured that cinema would never be the same.

The five briskly entertaining, vividly performed westerns made by director Budd Boetticher and strapping star Randolph Scott in the second half of the 1950s transcend their B-movie origins to become rich, unexpectedly profound explorations of loyalty, greed, honor, and revenge. Often grouped under the name Ranown (after producer Harry Joe Brown and Scott’s production company) and colorfully scripted by Burt Kennedy and Charles Lang, these films seem to unfold in a world unto themselves, staking a claim between traditional westerns and the subversive genre revisionism of the 1960s—and representing the crowning achievement of the underappreciated auteur Boetticher.

Based on a story by Elmore Leonard, this collaboration between director Budd Boetticher, actor Randolph Scott, and screenwriter Burt Kennedy is a model of elegantly economical storytelling charged with psychological tension. Here, Scott is the easygoing rancher who, along with the newlywed daughter (Maureen O’Sullivan) of a wealthy mining baron, must use his wits to stay alive when he is taken hostage by a band of ruthless stagecoach robbers. He is memorably matched by Richard Boone’s dangerously charming, nearly sympathetic villain in a performance that exemplifies the fine moral shading that distinguishes the Ranown westerns.

There, both he and the townspeople face a reckoning that forces them to confront disturbing truths about themselves. One of the most bizarre and surreal films in Cronenberg's already bizarre and surreal catalog of films, Naked Lunch is steeped in hyptnotic imagery held by incredible performacnes and an amazing Howard Shore score. Burroughs has always been a polarizing figure and so too was this film. Part adaptation of Burroughs' novel, his actual life, and other short stories, Peter Weller stars as William Lee who after killing his wife, grabs his typewriter and flees to the North African Interzone. It's a hell of a trip and essential viewing for any Cronenberg fan. It's also damned hard to peg a specific genre. Is it comedy? Drama? Horror? Science Fiction? All of the above? You'll just have to huff your own tank of bug killer and find out for yourself!

Throughout pretty much all of the calendar year so far, we have had a lot of 4K releases every single week. This week is without a doubt, the slowest release week of all, the tap is just a bit of a trickle for both formats. Let's take this pause to refill our wallets a bit.
Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 45 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of April 9th - April 15th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
There are TWO titles this week, both of which are considered catalog titles. First from Paramount, Flashdance gets a 4K upgrade. The standard edition dons a golden shower cover art while the SteelBook has a more traditional poster cover. Although the SteelBook is not listed as a Best Buy Exclusive, it seems to not be orderable via Amazon.
From Criterion, the 4K upgrade of The Fisher King. Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, why not?
Next week we return to a normal release pattern with the delayed Rebel Without a Cause, Serpico, 12 Angry Men and more.

No disrespect to '88' Films and the great releases they produce, but after the obligatory '88' day delay, Gorgeous (Jackie Chan) appears to be on track for release this week.
Arrow Video is also in on the Jackie Chan train with Heart of Dragon. Alternately you can get the original artwork edition direct from Arrow Video. Shout Factory delayed their Jackie Chan release by two weeks, talk about missed opportunity.
Generally I don't publicize reissues, but Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses celebrates 20 years with two special releases, a standard (but swag-filled) edition and a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods has a release date of May 23rd, it includes several retailer exclusives.

Zachary Levi returns with his SHAZAM-ified friends in the superhero sequel hitting 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray on May 23. There will also be exclusive editions available at Best Buy as well as Wal-Mart. Digital will release on April 7.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” continues the story of teenage Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam. Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. After all editions of their Mediabook release sold out virtually overnight, Turbine is reissuing 2007's survival horror thriller P2 with a standard softpack 2-Disc release. While you miss out on some of the cool art options and the booklet, you can now enjoy this slick thriller with the excellent transfer and either Atmos or Auro-3D audio!
For some inexplicable reason, P2 has never been released on Blu-ray in the U.S. of A. There have been other Blu-ray releases in various import markets, but they used the old problematic VC-1 encode and just never really came to life. Turbine gives this fun gnarly little horror flick a new (and much improved) encode and then supes up the package with two excellent audio options. The film itself may not be the best feature of all time, but it works and offers up one of the gnarliest kills:
