Who Directed Poltergeist Anyway? 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray & Blu-ray Release Guide - September 18, 2022 - September 24, 2022

My oh my, where has the month already gone? In the Northern Hemisphere Fall Begins on Thursday. How has this month been to your wallets thus far?

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 18 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

This week the 4K disc category is pretty manageable, and there actually are no 'new' releases.

Import Monday has the same exact movies that Domestic Tuesday but come with two differences, one that the import includes various articles of swag, such as a poster, lobby cards, or other such pack-ins, and two, there is no digital code. Weigh your options here.

Crawl (Paramount Pictures) gets a Zavvi Exclusive Collector's Edition. A standard edition of Poltergeist, as well as the swag-filled Zavvi Exclusive SteelBook comes from Warner Bros. The Lost Boys has a swag-filled Zavvi Exclusive SteelBook too.

Domestic Tuesday's counterpart titles include Crawl from Paramount Pictures.

From Warner Bros, Poltergeist gets a standard case release as well as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. The Lost Boys carries from last week to this week with a standard case release and a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook.

Still with Warner Bros, Batman: The Long Halloween gets a deluxe edition. This includes parts 1 & 2 as a single movie.

Old Henry gets a 4K upgrade from Shout Factory.

And finally, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull gets a general release SteelBook with the standard movie poster cover art, just like the predecessors.

Next week looks infinitely worse than it really is. If you missed out on a lot of SteelBook releases, Sony is reprinting them and offering them up again, so it could still be pretty pricey. But there's a lot, including dead people, summer knowledge, hitmen in Ireland, how dare you, drummer boy, a norse god, and of course HG Wells' best known work.

Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterpart this week is just Batman: The Long Halloween, in case you had not bought the previous two releases.

From Universal Pictures, an odd combination of genres, Comedy/Mystery/Thriller Vengeance debuts to disc this week.

Anime highlights include Dragon Ball Super: Complete Series [Collector's SteelBook], Girls und Panzer das Finale - Part 3 and SHADOWS HOUSE - The Complete Season.

TV On Disc: From Sony, Outlander: Season 6 comes as a standard edition and as a Limited Collector's Edition. From CBS, Walker: Season One (2021). Great time to put the Chuck Norris series on blu-ray (hint hint).

Somewhere I read that Bruce Willis had retired, but it feels like every week has another film release or two with him in it. From Vertical Entertainment, this week it is in Wrong Place.

Criterion Collection this week is offering Exotica, a title considered a psychological thriller. If that's not your thing, maybe Le Corbeau, a French drama/war film is.

Looking for another shark movie? The Reef: Stalked comes via RLJ Entertainment. You know you wanted another one.

The next classic film from Powerhouse Films' Indicator Series comes out this week with Orders To Kill.

Honorable Mention: Out of print Twilight Time titles get another go, this time via Sandpiper Pictures. Look for Woody Allen's Bananas, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But were afraid to ask) and Love and Death.

Notable announcements from last week:

Raw Deal 4K [Import] starring Arnold Schwarzenegger has been pushed from this week to October 24th. This one has yet to even get a blu-ray release in the U.S., we can only hope right?

Jordan Peele's Nope has been made official for disc release on October 25th.

Criterion Collection has announced their December titles. Call me lost, I really cannot say for sure that I know any of them.

Halo: Season One is getting a blu-ray, 4K disc as well as a 4K disc SteelBook edition November 15th. TV on 4K disc is always a good thing!

Criterion Announces Four Blu-ray Packages for December Including Two Triple Feature Sets

This December, The Criterion Collection is bringing Cooley High, The Velvet Underground, and two 3-film sets from directors Mai Zetterling and Austrian auteur Michael Haneke to Blu-ray.

First up on December 6 we have the Michael Haneke: Trilogy  featuring The Seventh Continent, Benny's Video, and 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance on Blu-ray.

Michael Haneke: Trilogy - Criterion Collection

One of contemporary cinema’s most original, provocative, and uncompromising filmmakers, Austrian auteur Michael Haneke dares viewers to stare into the void of modern existence. With his first three theatrical features, The Seventh Continent, Benny’s Video, and 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance—a trilogy depicting a coldly bureaucratic society in which genuine human relationships have been supplanted by a deep-seated collective malaise—Haneke established the rigorous visual style and unsettling themes that would recur throughout his work. Exploring the relationships among consumerism, violence, mass media, and contemporary alienation, these brilliant, relentlessly probing films open up profound questions about the world in which we live while refusing the false comfort of easy answers.

THREE-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • High-definition digital masters, supervised by director Michael Haneke, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks
  • New interview with actor Arno Frisch
  • New interview with film historian Alexander Horwath
  • Interviews from 2005 with Haneke
  • Documentary about Haneke’s career featuring interviews with the director and actors Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, and Jean-Louis Trintignant
  • Deleted scenes from Benny’s Video
  • Trailers
  • New English subtitle translations
  • PLUS: An essay by novelist John Wray

THE SEVENTH CONTINENT

The day-to-day routines of a seemingly ordinary Austrian family (Birgit Doll, Dieter Berner, and Leni Tanzer) begin to take on a sinister complexion in Michael Haneke’s chilling portrait of bourgeois anomie giving way to shocking self-destruction. Inspired by a true story, the director’s first theatrical feature finds him fully in command of his style, observing with rigorous, clinical detachment the spiritual emptiness at the heart of consumer culture—and the horror that lurks beneath its placid surfaces. The Seventh Continent builds to an annihilating encounter with the televisual void that powerfully synthesizes Haneke’s ideas about the link between violence and our culture of manufactured emotion.

1989 • 108 minutes • Color • Monaural • In German with English subtitles • 1.66:1 aspect ratio

BENNY’S VIDEO

Michael Haneke turns the unflinching gaze of the camera back on itself in this provocative, profoundly disturbing study of emotional disconnection in the age of mass-media saturation. Benny (a frighteningly affectless Arno Frisch), the teenage son of wealthy, disengaged parents (Angela Winkler and Ulrich Mühe), finds release in the world of violent videos—an obsession that leads him to create his own monstrous work of real-life horror. Layering screens within screens and digital frames within the filmic frame, Benny’s Video is a coolly postmodern, metacinematic labyrinth in which the boundaries between actual and mediated violence become terrifyingly indistinguishable.

1992 • 110 minutes • Color • Monaural • In German with English subtitles • 1.66:1 aspect ratio

71 FRAGMENTS OF A CHRONOLOGY OF CHANCE

The simultaneously random and interconnected nature of modern existence comes into harrowing focus in the despairing final installment of Michael Haneke’s trilogy. Seventy-one intricate, puzzlelike scenes survey the routines of a handful of seemingly unrelated people—including an undocumented Romanian boy (Gabriel Cosmin Urdes) living on the streets of Vienna, a couple (Anne Bennent and Udo Samel) who are desperate to adopt a child, and a college student (Lukas Miko) on the edge—whose stories collide in a devastating encounter at a bank. The omnipresent drone of television news broadcasts in 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance underscores Haneke’s vision of a numb, dehumanizing world in which emotional estrangement can be punctured only by the shock of sudden violence.

1994 • 99 minutes • Color • Monaural • In German with English subtitles • 1.66:1 aspect ratio

The last three Blu-ray titles will all release on December 13, starting with the 1975 comedy-drama  Cooley High  from Director Michael Schultz.

Cooley High - Criterion Collection

Chicago, 1964: it’s the last weeks of high school for aspiring poet Preach (Glynn Turman) and his best friend, Cochise (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs), and they have a full slate of extracurricular activities: swinging dance parties, late-night joyrides, and the stumbling pursuit of romance. Of course, when you’re a young Black man in America, your coming-of-age story is far from complication-free. With Cooley High, director Michael Schultz and screenwriter Eric Monte—who drew on his own experiences growing up in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project—arrived at something truly unique in 1970s cinema: an endearingly funny, tender, and authentic portrait of Black teens striving toward a brighter tomorrow, brought to life by a dynamic ensemble cast and set to a heavenly hit parade of Motown classics.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL FEATURES

  • New, restored 4K digital transfer, supervised and approved by director Michael Schultz, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • New conversation between Schultz and film scholar Racquel J. Gates
  • Program on the making of the film
  • Panel discussion from the 2019 tribute to Cooley High at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, featuring Schultz, actor and filmmaker Robert Townsend, casting director Gloria Schultz, and actors Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Garrett Morris
  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

 1975 • 107 minutes • Color • Monaural • 1.85:1 aspect ratio

The documentary The Velvet Underground  from filmmaker Todd Haynes.

The Velvet Underground - Criterion Collection

Emerging from the primordial soup of glamour, gutter sleaze, and feverish creativity that was New York’s 1960s underground culture, the Velvet Underground redefined music with its at once raw and exalted blend of experimentation and art-damaged rock and roll. In his kaleidoscopic documentary The Velvet Underground, Todd Haynes vividly evokes the band’s incandescent world: the creative origins of the twin visionaries Lou Reed and John Cale, Andy Warhol’s fabled Factory, and the explosive tension between pop and the avant-garde that propelled the group and ultimately consumed it. Never-before-seen performances, interviews, rare recordings, and mind-blowing transmissions from the era’s avant-garde cinema scene come together in an ecstatic swirl of sound and image that is to the traditional music documentary what the Velvets were to rock: utterly revolutionary.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • New 4K digital master, approved by director Todd Haynes and cinematographer Ed Lachman, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • Audio commentary featuring Haynes and editors Affonso Gonçalves and Adam Kurnitz
  • Outtakes of interviews shot for the film with musicians John Cale, Jonathan Richman, and Maureen Tucker; filmmaker Jonas Mekas; and actor Mary Woronov
  • Conversation from 2021 among Haynes, Cale, and Tucker
  • Complete versions of some of the avant-garde films excerpted in the movie, including Piero Heliczer’s Venus in Furs (1965)
  • Teaser
  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Optional annotated subtitle track that identifies the avant-garde films seen in the movie
  • PLUS: A 2021 essay by critic Greil Marcus

2021 • 120 minutes • Color/Black & White • Dolby Atmos/5.1 surround • 1.77:1 aspect ratio

And finally, a set of three films from director  Mai Zetterling  will be available on the same date. Included in this set is Loving Couples, Night Games, and The Girls.

Three Films By Mai Zetterling - Criterion Collection

A fearlessly transgressive, long-overlooked pioneer of feminist cinema, Swedish actor turned director Mai Zetterling ruffled the feathers of the patriarchal establishment with a string of bracingly modern, sexually frank, and politically incendiary films focused on female agency and the turbulent state of twentieth-century Europe. Her peerless ability to render subjective psychological states with startling immediacy is on display in Loving Couples, Night Games, and The Girls—three provocative, taboo-shattering works from the 1960s featuring some of Swedish cinema’s most iconic stars. With their audacious narrative structures that fuse reality and fantasy, their elaborate use of metaphor and symbolism, and their willingness to delve into the most fraught realms of human experience, these movies are models of adventurous, passionately engaged filmmaking.

THREE-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • New 2K digital restorations, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks
  • New interview with author Alicia Malone
  • Maybe I Really Am a Sorceress, a 1989 documentary on director Mai Zetterling, featuring interviews with Zetterling; her coscreenwriter, David Hughes; and actors Harriet Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Bibi Andersson, and Gunnel Lindblom
  • Lines from the Heart, a 1996 documentary reuniting The Girls actors Harriet Andersson, Bibi Andersson, and Lindblom
  • Interview with Zetterling from 1984 on Loving Couples and The Girls
  • Swedish television footage from 1966, filmed on location during the production of Night Games and at the film’s premiere
  • New English subtitle translations
  • PLUS: An essay by film scholar Mariah Larsson

LOVING COUPLES

The title of Mai Zetterling’s boldly iconoclastic debut feature—adapted from a cycle of seven novels by the provocative feminist writer Agnes von Krusenstjerna—drips with irony. In 1915, three pregnant women from varying social backgrounds (Harriet Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom, and Gio Petré) enter a maternity ward. Cue a swirl of perspective-shifting flashbacks that, with searing psychological insight, illuminate the divergent yet interconnected experiences that brought them there—and that came to a head during one lavish, debauched Midsommar celebration. Wildly subversive in its treatment of sexuality, gender, class, religion, marriage, and motherhood, Loving Couples is as electrifying a first feature as any in cinema history, announcing the arrival of an uncompromising artist in pursuit of raw emotional truth.

1964 • 118 minutes • Black & White • Monaural • In Swedish with English subtitles • 1.66:1 aspect ratio

NIGHT GAMES

Outrageous and explosively controversial (the Venice Film Festival refused to screen it publicly, while John Waters has called it his favorite film), Mai Zetterling’s second feature is a blazing psychosexual odyssey with heaving Freudian flourishes. On the eve of his marriage to his fiancée (Lena Brundin), Jan (Keve Hjelm) returns to his childhood home—a sprawling estate stuffed with antiques—where he relives his memories of his beautiful, decadent, mercurial mother (Ingrid Thulin) and finds himself forced to confront his unresolved Oedipal longings. Seamlessly interweaving past and present, carnivalesque camp and potent symbolism, Night Games functions as both a feverishly perverse family portrait and a serious statement on the tormented soul of a modern Europe reckoning with the demons of its past.

1966 • 105 minutes • Black & White • Monaural • In Swedish with English subtitles • 1.66:1 aspect ratio

THE GIRLS

Mai Zetterling’s cinema reached new heights of exuberant experimentation and fierce political engagement with this pointed and playful touchstone of 1960s feminist cinema. As they tour Sweden in a theatrical production of Lysistrata, performing to often uncomprehending audiences, three women (national cinema icons Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, and Gunnel Lindblom) find their own lives and marriages mirrored in the complex, combative gender relations at the heart of Aristophanes’s play. Onstage drama, offstage reality, and a torrent of surrealist fantasies and daydreams collide in The Girls, a slashing, sardonic reflection on the myriad challenges confronting women on their path to liberation, and on the struggles of the female artist fighting to make her voice heard over the patriarchal din.

1968 • 100 minutes • Black & White • Monaural • in Swedish with English subtitles • 1.66:1 aspect ratio

As usual, we'll continue to post updates as soon as they become available.

Casablanca Celebrates its 80th Anniversary with a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on November 8

Michael Curtiz's timeless Oscar-winner starring the legendary Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman is getting the 4K UHD treatment November 8.

Casablanca: easy to enter, but much harder to leave, especially if you're wanted by the Nazis. Such a man is Resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), whose only hope is Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a cynical American who sticks his neck out for no one - especially Victor's wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), the ex-lover who broke his heart. Ilsa offers herself in exchange for Laszlo's transport out of the country and bitter Rick must decide what counts more – personal happiness or countless lives hanging in the balance.

“The best Hollywood movie of all time” according to film critic Leonard Maltin won three Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay) and will soon be available in 4K - although it does seem that the film will only be presented in HDR. Here is a snippet about the restoration from the press release (the full release is included at the end of this news post):

The new Casablanca 4K Ultra High-Definition image was restored and remastered from a 2022 4K 16bit film scan of the best-surviving nitrate film elements. The 4K-scanned digital images went through an extensive digital restoration process to clean and repair the picture for an unprecedented and pristine ultra-high-resolution presentation. The restored images were then graded in High Dynamic Range for today’s premium 4K display experience, providing the highest fidelity in image contrast and detail retention. This work was meticulously handled by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging. The original theatrical mono audio has also been newly restored as well, providing a richer and broader frequency response than previously possible.

Ain't Nothin' But a Hound Dog - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray & Blu-ray Release Guide - September 11, 2022 - September 17, 2022

Anyone that follows some of the trade sites for disc media probably read that 4K discs just experienced their highest sales share ever. In a market that is contracting, that is overall good news. With all the good releases this month, what are you going to get? Are we going to set a new record this month too?

Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 17 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

By volume, this week is about the same as last week for 4K titles, but there appears to be more variety. Starting with import Monday first, Zavvi has an exclusive SteelBook of the 2021 action film Nobody, and just like so many other UK releases, it includes a bit of swag and a side load slip case to hold it all.

There are two New Releases on Tuesday's docket, both titles were short-notice announcements. And even though September was already pretty crowded, the studios still decided to go for it anyway. First from Warner Bros., the 2022 biopic film Elvis. I've still not seen a Tom Hanks movie that I have disliked. Sure, he is not Elvis, but he's a supporting role.

From Disney/Pixar comes Lightyear, and surprisingly this one has only two options, a standard release and a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. No Target, No Walmart, and best I can tell, Zavvi is identical to Best Buy's. Maybe I will save a few bucks here. (When I can't decide, I tend to overspend.)

On to catalog titles, and probably the best way to sort them out is by label. From Paramount, the steamy thriller Fatal Attraction starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. Well known slasher pic Friday the 13th debuts to 4K disc as well. The completionist in me says bring them all, but I sort of suspect they will do them one-by-one like the Scream films. The Addams Family (1991) also get a SteelBook repackage.

Universal has got a single entry this week, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. Which member of the Python cast is your favourite? <-- See what I did there?

Sony Pictures brings 80's comedy Real Genius to 4K disc. Fond memories back when this came out have caused me to preorder this one!

Still in the same decade, Warner Bros. offers up The Lost Boys as a standard edition and a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook. Moved to September 20th.

Last, but certainly not least, Shout Select has the '86 drama/war film Platoon, and under the Scream Factory label, John Carpenter's The Fog, offered up in a standard package and a general release Limited Edition SteelBook Edition.

Next week, voracious reptiles, literally channeling a TV, Batman sees pumpkins, Henry has aged and more.

Blu-ray releases-

Let's do what we do every week, list and blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K release titles. From Warner Bros, the 2022 biopic Elvis sees blu-ray/dvd/digital combo pack. And from Disney/Pixar, Lightyear also sees the same type of combo pack. There are no retailer exclusives on the latter.

Sony MOD is releasing 28 Days (2000) starring Sandra Bullock, Caught (1996) and A Weekend with Lulu.

Under the standard Sony Pictures label comes Where the Crawdads Sing, based on the mystery novel of the same name.

Warner Archive has got Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940) for us this week.

Cool World gets a long overdue release under the Shout Select label.

Criterion Collectors should be looking for Take Out this week.

TV on disc includes Eli Roth’s History of Horror: Season 3 from RLJ and  Lucifer: The Sixth & Final Season from Warner Bros.

From Vertical Entertainment, the 2022 horror film Abandoned streets on Tuesday. In the drama category, look for The Forgiven (2021).  LionsGate has Cave Rescue, which is, as you guess, based on the event that happened recently in Thailand.

Anime highlights include BACK ARROW - Part 2 and Saiyuki Gaiden: Complete Collection.

Honorable mention: George A. Romero's The Amusement Park comes to us via RLJ Entertainment/Shudder Films.

Notable announcements from last week:

Announcements keep happening and listings keep popping up, that is the way things should be.

Kino Lorber has indicated a 4K disc release for Needful Things will be happening soon, likely late November is my guess.

Paramount Presents' next title will be Blue Hawaii on 4K disc, the original listing indicated November 15th.

To Kill a Mockingbird will be getting a 4K disc AND a 4K disc giftset on October 11th from Universal. I hope this is a sign of things to come, time and time again the UK gets a giftset with swag such as theater cards, book, etc and the US gets just a disc in a case. Hope you're all as excited as I am about this option.

Universal is releasing 8 Mile to 4K disc and an exclusive SteelBook on the GRUV shop on November 8th.

Will We Get A Jaws (1975) 3D Blu-ray? I hope so!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the theater without your glasses…

Steven Spielberg’s iconic summer movie Jaws returns to theaters now in three dimensions! This classic deserves to be seen in the theaters and for those weighing checking it out in IMAX or in Real 3D - the 3D experience was surprisingly effective adding depth and dimension to virtually the entire film. You may not need 3D to enjoy Jaws, but it’s certainly an exciting new way to experience this summer cinema classic.

As Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) and his family settle into their new hometown of Amity for their first summer, a terror lurks off the shores of the small island community. The first death was ruled a boating accident. The second is a small boy who was attacked in front of a beach full of swimmers and sunbathers. With every fisherman trying to hunt the maneater out of the water, Brody along with shark expert Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and local sharker Quint (Robert Shaw) will set out to destroy the monster that has staked a claim to the waters of Amity Island.

Jaws, above most others, is one of my absolute favorite films. I watch it at a minimum once a year. Ever since I was a kid I was fascinated by this movie devouring every viewing with repeat turns to the silly sequels. One of my favorite books is The Jaws Log from screenwriter Carl Gottlieb detailing the chaotic shoot because it gives me an even greater appreciation of the film. The fact this film turned out as good as it did is a testament to Gottlieb’s writing, Bill Butler’s beautiful cinematography, Verna Fields’ intense editing, John William’s indelible score, and the then untested Steven Spielberg’s uncanny cinematic eye. For a shoot where everything went so wrong, everything about this film works perfectly.

As someone who has seen this film countless times on home video and at least half a dozen times in theaters, there are few surprises anymore. While I still jump at certain scenes, I know they’re coming. So when it was announced that Jaws was coming back to theaters I was faced with the dilemma of checking it out at IMAX or converted for Real 3D. Being a 3D junkie I was intrigued at the idea but was concerned about how well a nearly 50-year-old film that wasn’t shot with 3D in mind let alone Bill Butler’s photography would play out converted for three-dimensional viewing. So I bought my ticket with some trepidation but was almost immediately put at ease.

Flat out - this is one of the best 3D conversions of a classic film. I thought Spielberg’s Jurassic Park 3D was decent enough but didn’t exactly blow my hair back. James Cameron’s 3D conversion of Titanic was certainly impressive but I haven't gone back to it since I bought the disc. "Fun but not necessary" has been a way to describe a lot of conversions of classics to 3D. While Jaws certainly didn’t need to be converted to 3D, it’s an overwhelming success. From the opening credits to the terrifying beach sequences to the final hunt on the Orca, an impressive amount of care was put into this conversion. And sure, there are a few sequences that don’t quite pop - namely the Brody clan at home at the beginning and a smattering of scenes elsewhere - but there are some genuinely surprising and even a few viscerally arresting 3D shots. There may not be many "pop-out" effects, but the sense of deep depth was really something to see.

I was most impressed with the underwater sequences with the shark swimming up towards its latest prey. Even in the darkness of the opening attack on Chrissie Watkins' feet felt like they were coming out of the screen ever so slightly as the water’s surface gave the image the perfect depth reference. Similarly, when Alex Kintner is eaten on his raft, the shark carefully swims around the kicking feet until it sees a target more fitting to its appetite. But the Dolly Zoom of Roy Scheider’s face is a true showstopper for the entire film. But throughout the film, there are great 3D moments to enjoy, and the film's feeling for natural depth really opens up in the last hour as Brody, Quint, and Hooper hunt the shark.

While not every scene and shot completely works in 3D - the town meeting after Alex is killed is rather dicey because of how busy the staging is - but overall this was a pretty wild and exciting experience. Part of the fun of seeing this movie that I’m so familiar with in 3D was it let me just focus on the visual experience. I didn’t need to give 100% of my attention to the film's plot so I was struck by a number of little things I’d never noticed. When Hooper is dissecting the shark, I found it humorous that for some reason he’s still wearing his dinner tie. When Quint notices the fishing line clicking in the reel he carefully pockets a half-eaten cracker. Did he ever get to finish that cracker? Or did the shark get the last bite? I’ve seen this movie well over a hundred times in my 40 years on this planet and I love that I still find new little details like that to soak up and appreciate. I may not have needed this movie in 3D to spot these moments but the experience of sitting in a darkened theater certainly helped. Thankfully my local theater does a great job keeping their projectors in working order. It was plenty bright so any dimming of the glasses didn’t adversely affect the viewing experience. Taking the glasses off to check the 3D conversion effort I was impressed to see there was very little dead space that wasn’t converted in some way. There's always that object or person to anchor the sense of depth, but even in a scene like when the kids are practicing their parade, that anchor point would move along so there was always a great sense of three-dimensional depth.

And with that, I hope this theatrical outing isn’t the one and only place we’ll get to enjoy this 3D conversion. As 3D faded here in the states without any new television sets supporting the format and only a smattering of projectors adequately up to the task, new Blu-ray 3D discs have become a bit of a rarity. Kino Lorber with 3-D Film Archive has done an amazing job restoring and bringing natively shot 3D films to disc. Warner Bros still quietly drops a 3D disc here and there as they did with Dune and Godzilla vs Kong. But for big Marvel properties, fans of the format have had to turn to the import market. The UK used to be pretty reliable but lately, Japan and Australia are the lengths fans have to go to get the films they want in the format they want to see them. I hope that’s not the case here. I dearly hope Universal plans on delivering this 3D conversion to disc locally - but if I have to import it, I’ll gladly hop a boat and set sail to get it! If you enjoy 3D and can make it to the theater, check out Jaws in 3D while you can. With that - I’m now off to IMAX because one good turn deserves another.
