Who needs food or transportation when there are so many great movies coming to 4K Ultra HD?
As Charles Dickens once said... "It was the best of times... it was the worst of times." if you're a physical media collector aiming to expand the number of titles on your shelf, the Fall/Winter release season is certainly the best of times. However, if you're looking to squirrel away some monies for Holiday gifts for other people, well... you can always do that thing where you give someone the gift you want for yourself, and then when they look at that import 4K of Cannibal Holocaust you can be like "oh if you don't want it I'll take it!" That way it's kinda like giving a gift to yourself through another person!
September is always the month where Studios and Boutique Labels begin to crash their biggest and best titles onto fans, and this year is no different. If anything because of the Pandemic and the slow return to theaters it's even better (or worse depending on your finances). This month sees some major heavy hitters come to bat so we better jump right in.
There are also a bunch of Sony SteelBook "reprints" returning to stores:
And that is everything that should be coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for September 2022 - there are a few Imports we hope to cover but we'll do our best to get through all of these in a timely fashion. If this fall and holiday season is anything like last year, there may be some last-minute switch-ups with the release schedule, we already saw that with The Funhouse and this month was supposed to see Army of Darkness come out at the same time as Evil Dead (2013) so we'll see what happens. If any changes do occur, we'll update our listings and this article ASAP.
Until next time, thanks again for the pre-orders. They really do go a long way towards keeping our little operation up and running. Happy Collecting!
First actual full week of September is upon us, pumpkin spice has been in the air a week or three, in our food and in our beer. We kind of did let you know that it is going to be a big month for 4K disc shoppers, this week is just a warm-up.
Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 16 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
Let's roll! Actually, this week is not too bad for 4K shoppers, unless you are a big Star Trek fan. For me, that means it's bad! But before we do that, let's mention the single new release title first. Just like other recent titles from them, Universal chose to announce this one with practically zero notice. I haven't seen it myself but I have all of the others in the franchise on 4K disc. I have read that it was censored in China and they have also added a "Crime doesn't pay" message at the end, I'm referring to Minions: The Rise of Gru.
Moving on to what is dubbed as "the final frontier", there are plenty'o Star Trek releases this week. Because it's logical to start at the beginning, let's start with Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The most complete edition is dubbed The Director's Edition The Complete Adventure and includes the theatrical, director's and the 1983 longer TV editions. For a breakdown of all three versions and their features, visit the link to read the review, then you can order it from there. If you're looking to add the Director's Edition which includes a new Atmos mix, a new Dolby Vision pass, and you do not care for the TV edition, the release simply labeled The Director's Edition is for you.
Did you buy the original 4-movie collection and simply want Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country? Yup, these links will send you that direction. As much as I hate to double-dip, mathematically, it might make sense to buy Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection to get everything in one package (minus the TV version of The Motion Picture). Prefer singles for all the movies? Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home can be bought that way too, and all feature the movie poster artwork.
Scream Factory has The Funhouse (1981) to help get in the mood for Halloween (and pumpkin spice).
If you collect Criterion releases, or you're looking for a good flick, Blow Out starring John Travolta can be part of your collection Tuesday.
Semi-double-dip of 3:10 to Yuma comes out, but as one of those Best Buy Exclusive slipcover style SteelBooks. A Quiet Place - 2-Movie Collection is also available, two for the price of one, right?
Thirty or so domestic release blu-ray titles this week. Just like we do every week, let's list the blu-ray counterparts of the above titles first.
From Universal, Minions: The Rise of Gru, alternately there is a Target Exclusive to choose from, and lastly from Paramount, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Director's Edition), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Kind of a blu-ray counterpart, but new, Minions: 2-Movie Collection also comes via Universal. The 2022 comedy Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is also available this week from Universal Pictures.
LionsGate's entry this week is in the Thriller category with Paradise Highway.
TV on disc this week includes Peacemaker: The Complete First Season (no order link yet, delayed??) and Young Sheldon: The Complete Fifth Season, both via Warner Bros.
The Warner Archive label releases Rachel, Rachel this week as well.
Anime highlights include Boruto: Naruto Next Generations - Set 13 (The Vessel), Magical Warfare: Complete Collection and RE-MAIN - The Complete Season.
Honorable mention: Two out of print Vincent Price gems get reissued, with slipcovers this go round from Kino Lorber, they are The Oblong Box and Twice-Told Tales.
Not leaving it there, Kino presents three 3-D Film Archive restorations packaged together and labeled as Paravision Dreams: The Golden Age 3-D Films of Pine and Thomas. Check out our review, buy your copy today. Kino Lorber keeps finding ways to take my money.
Imprint Films' 'August' releases are available this Friday from Amazon;
Sandpiper Pictures will be reissuing multiple Woody Allen titles in October/November, they're all titles that are all out of print Twilight Time releases.
The cult favorite Pulp Fiction appears on track for a 4K release, word is it will be December 6th.
Multiple Christmas Favorites will be getting 4K discs in November, check out our article here. Titles thus far include National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, The Polar Express, The Original Christmas Classics and Elf. Polar Express will also be getting a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook.
Saturday Night Fever, and a bunch of Shout Factory titles have been announced for 4K as well, check out the article here. Titles include The Company of Wolves, Rollerball, Used Cars, and Piranha.
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?
Paramount's Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta will hit 4K ultra HD Blu-ray on November 8, while Shout/Scream will also release The Company of Wolves, Rollerball, Used Cars, and Piranha in 4K for you to feast on.
Saturday Night Fever - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
From John Travolta’s electrifying Oscar®-nominated performance to the unforgettable dancing, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER is nothing less than a movie sensation. Featuring a bonus Blu-ray with the Director’s Cut, as well as hours of extensive special features. Travolta catapulted to fame as Tony Manero, a restless Brooklyn rebel who escapes problems at home and an uncertain future every Saturday night when he shines as king of the disco dance floor. Pulsing with the beat of its timeless, best-selling soundtrack, and looking better than ever on 4K UHD with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, this is essential cinema. NOVEMBER 8.
The Company Of Wolves - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
"A GLOOMY, FANTASTICAL UNIVERSE FILLED WITH GNARLED TREES, WICKED THORNBUSHES, CLAMMY MISTS, TORTUROUS PATHS ... THE MOVIE HAS AN UNCANNY HYPNOTIC FORCE ..." – Roger Ebert
Fascinating and imaginative, this riveting thriller from director Neil Jordan (Interview With The Vampire) brings the timeless tale of "Little Red Riding Hood" and werewolf fables together in a haunting, compelling and eerie way.
A wise grandmother (Angela Lansbury) tells her granddaughter Rosaleen (Sarah Patterson) a disturbing tale of innocent maidens falling in love with handsome strangers ... and of their sudden mysterious disappearances when the moon is full and accompanied by the strange sound of a beast in the woods. Nominated for four BAFTA awards including Best Costume Design, Best Make Up Artist, Best Production Design/Art Direction and Best Special Visual Effects, The Company Of Wolves is a tale that will chill you like no other ... NOVEMBER 22.
Rollerball - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
In the future, there are no wars. There is no crime. There is only ... the Game. In a world where ruthless corporations reign supreme, this vicious and barbaric "sport" is the only outlet for the pent-up anger and frustrations of the masses.
Tuned to their televisions, the people watch "Rollerball": a brutal mutation of football, motocross, and hockey. Jonathan E. (the great James Caan, The Godfather, Thief) is the champion player – a man too talented for his own good. The Corporation has taken away the woman, Ella (Maud Adams, Octopussy) Jonathon loves, but they can't take away his soul – even if the diabolical corporate head (John Houseman, The Fog) tells him he better retire ... or suffer the old-fashioned way. With its surrealistic imagery and tense action sequences, Rollerball grips you by the heart – and never lets you go. NOVEMBER 22.
Used Cars - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
"HILARIOUS BLACK COMEDY." – Time Out
"SAVAGELY FUNNY." – The Onion A.V. Club
"RIOTOUS ... INVENTIVE ... MEMORABLE" – TV Guide
Director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the Back To The Future trilogy) is the engine behind Used Cars — the hilariously raunchy salute to those supersalesmen who'll offer lemons while putting the squeeze on you.
Rudy Russo (Kurt Russell, Escape from New York) has what it takes to be top salesman on Luke Fuchs' (Jack Warden) car lot — he's the most charming man who'll ever lie to you. Caught up in a feud between Luke and his brother/rival Roy L. Fuchs (also played by Warden), Rudy gears up for an all-out war. Employing his gifts of gab and grift — along with increasingly outlandish sales tactics — Rudy shifts the battle for sales supremacy into overdrive, turning the lot into a high-octane free-for-all! NOVEMBER 15.
While searching for missing teenagers, novice skip tracer Maggie McKeown (Heather Menzies) and one of the locals, town boozer Paul Grogan (Bradford Dillman), stumble upon a top-secret Army laboratory doing genetic research on piranha for the purpose of biological warfare. When they are accidentally released from the compound, the deadly school of eating machines head downstream and eat everything and anything in their path.
Piranha features a stellar group of talent in front of as well as behind the camera. The top-notch cast of cult stars includes Kevin McCarthy (Invasion Of The Body Snatchers), Barbara Steele (Black Sunday), Belinda Balaski (The Howling), Dick Miller (A Bucket Of Blood), Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul), and Richard Deacon (The Dick Van Dyke Show). NOVEMBER 1.
Piranha 4K is also available with a limited poster and collectible enamel pin set directly from shoutfactory.com.
We haven't had eyes on a full press release for these yet so we don't know final specs for bonus features, audio, or HDR grade, but once we do we'll update our listings ASAP. Also keep in mind these release dates are subject to change - if you remember last year we saw a lot of last-minute schedule shuffling so consider the release dates tentative for the time being.
Details are still scarce at the moment, but National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, The Polar Express, and Elf are all headed for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on November 1.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
As the holidays approach, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have a perfect family Christmas, so he pesters his wife, Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), and children, as he tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and house decorations. However, things go awry quickly. His hick cousin, Eddie (Randy Quaid), and his family show up unplanned and start living in their camper on the Griswold property. Even worse, Clark's employers renege on the holiday bonus he needs.
A Christmas Story - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
Set in a 1940s-era Midwestern town and told from the viewpoints of a seven-year-old boy, who only wants one thing for Christmas — a Red Ryder BB gun — the episodic tale chronicles not only his schemes to convince his mother and father to buy him one, but also offers a warmly nostalgic look into 1940s middle-class American life. From the stories of, and narrated by, Jean Shepherd.
The Polar Express - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.
This hilarious Christmas film tells the tale of a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts on Christmas Eve and is transported back to the North Pole and raised as an elf. Years later Buddy learns he is not really an elf and goes on a journey to New York City to find his true identity.
It also appears that The Original Christmas Classics Collection - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is listed for 4K UHD Blu-ray in November, but it's unclear what is included or if there will be separate releases. We'll keep you posted when more news for any of these releases is available!
When we get full press releases for these titles we'll update our listings and post to social. For now they're technically rumor, but with so many retailers already starting to punch in listings we're fairly certain they're coming, but we don't know if there will be retailer-exclusive artwork, what bonus features, or tech specs. Even the rumored release dates for November 1st aren't confirmed. As we saw so much title release movement last year, expect some of these dates to change throughout the Holiday season.
Michael Myers returns to terrorize his hometown backed by a diabolical deadly Druid cult, slash away at the students of his sister's lux boarding school, and then pop by the old homestead for his HGTV debut - too bad Chip and Joanna weren't there to greet him...
Earlier in the summer Scream Factory announced this 3-Movie 8-Disc set would be knocking on your door in time for Trick-or-Treaters this October. We knew this set would offer 4K and Blu-ray discs of each film, and in the case of The Curse of Michael Myers we'd be getting both cuts of the film. Now Scream delivers the full bloody gory details of this set for fans to salivate over. Each film will pick up a new 4K scan with Dolby Vision HDR, and for a couple of the films some new bonus features!
Take a look:

And that's all the news that's fit to print! While this is certainly a set that's going to appeal to some die-hard Halloween fans, it's nice to see that each film is getting a new Dolby Vision transfer, as well as some new bonus features are thrown into the mix so it's not just a repackaging of the content from the big Blu-ray set Scream Factory pumped out all those years ago.
Thank you for all of your pre-orders! They really do go a long way towards keeping our little operation up and running.
...drum roll please. August is coming to a close, and that means a bunch of things actually, but in this case, prepare yourselves for September releases. You have heard us mention it a few times just how big that month has shaped up to be. But, don't despair quite yet, let's close out August first.
Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 15 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
Import Monday starts out with a Zavvi Exclusive SteelBook for Halloween Kills.
No actual 'new releases' don domestic release Tuesday.
The newest title though to get a 4K release is the hit anime Belle, from Shout Factory/GKIDS. This one has got some swag to go with it. You all know how much I like swag, do check it out if you like anime!
Scream Factory releases Cat People after a small delay.
LionsGate has another 4K Best Buy Exclusive slipcover style SteelBook with 2011's Warrior.
Boutique label Vinegar Syndrome has a standard edition for Miami Connection this week, and Severin Films has Faceless.
Next week, Gru, the vast final frontier, a train ride, a carnival and a BDP thriller.
There is one blu-ray counterpart to the above 4K releases, Faceless from Severin Films.
TV on disc category includes 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story, The Bionic Woman: The Complete Series and Good Witch: The Complete Series.
LionsGate's entry this week is a comedy/horror titled American Carnage.
With a 3.5 second street date notice, Universal brings us the 2022 comedy Brian and Charles.
How about a little more comedy, but from Sony? The Phantom of the Open comes to disc with a title that your mind's auto-correct keeps calling something else.
Criterion Collectors BOLO for Faya Dayi.
From Arrow Video, Giallo Essentials V3 Black Edition comes to limited edition release. And if you've been waiting for a proper release of Running Out Of Time Collection, hopefully Arrow's got your back there too.
Anime highlights include Fatal Fury the Motion Picture [SteelBook], Lupin the 3rd VS Detective Conan the TV Special, Project A-ko 2, Rent-A-Girlfriend: Complete Collection [Premium Box Set], Sonny Boy - The Complete Season and Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town? - The Complete Season which is available as a standard edition and a Limited Editon.
Honorable mention this week is a Shout Select release titled A Walk In The Woods featuring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson.
Next week's blu-ray slate is a bit light, which for 4K buyers is a huge load off our backs.
Knowing that September is a very, VEEERRRYYY crowded month for new releases, is anyone surprised that Disney has just announced Thor: Love and Thunder for a September 27th release date? Check out the news story for a list of all the physical options available. I'm going to shut up now before I say something I shouldn't.
88 Films will be releasing Police Story 3: Supercop to 4K and blu-ray on December 13th. If you opt to import, Eureka is releasing the trilogy to 4K in September.
Arrow Video's North America slate (in addition to Shawscope Volume Two) now also includes Audrey Rose and Incredible But True. If you're ok with buying imports though, they have multiple 4K editions of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as a 4K edition to Wolf of Wall Street. One has to wonder if either will get an Arrow US release like True Romance did (a year after the fact). I am actually quite surprised Warner did not release Robin Hood to 4K, maybe they will, maybe they won't.
More TV on disc from CBS with Hogan's Heroes: The Complete Series coming october 25th.
Classic cinema from Universal with To Kill a Mockingbird coming to 4K on October 11th. A firm rumor that Warner Bros will be releasing Casablanca to 4K in November.... hopefully the US gets a similar set that the UK will most certainly get, one with a book, theater cards, movie poster or other swag?
Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?

At long last, Scream Factory has offered up full details for their upcoming October 4th, 2022 release of Army of Darkness on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Sam Raimi's third entry in the long-running Evil Dead franchise is an endearing fan favorite with a legion of loyal Deadite followers. Everyone has a favorite cut of the film and this set looks to give fans a little something of everything. Although it looks like only the original - and very short - Theatrical Cut will be getting the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with Dolby Vision HDR Upgrade. Have a look below for all the details for the Standard Edition or Limited Edition SteelBook of Army of Darkness
DISC 1 – (Theatrical Version – 4K UHD)
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, 2.0
DISC 2 – (Theatrical Version – Blu-ray)
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, 2.0
DISC 3 – (Director’s Cut – Blu-ray)
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, 2.0
DISC 4 – (International Cut – Blu-ray)
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, 2.0 (International Cut)
Sadly, it doesn't look like we're getting all of the cuts of the film in 4K after all. There was some hope that the International Cut and the Director's Cut would be getting the full 4K treatment but it doesn't look that way. We've reached out for confirmation since Press Releases are notoriously incomplete in a lot of the tech specs but given complicated rights issues on top of the condition of available elements, I'm not surprised only the Theatrical Cut is going to get the Dolby Vision treatment. I know some folks may be tired of picking this one up, but after decades of various VHS, DVDs, and Blu-rays, I highly doubt this first outing on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray will be the one and only 4K disc released.
Here's the full press release for your enjoyment...

Wow, another month coming to end end. For disc releases this means we are getting into dangerous (to our wallets) territory as September approaches. We still have one more Tuesday for the month, but it's never too soon to be prepared.
Welcome to Volume 3 Episode 14 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc this week, as well as a look at announcements from last week.
There are zero New Releases this week in this category, but we do have a few decent catalog options.
Import Monday starts out with Dog Soldiers (Collector's Edition) from Second Sight. Another import with a lot of cool swag, count me in!
Domestic Release Tuesday catalog titles next. First from Scream Factory, Dog Soldiers gets their Collector's Edition treatment, which in this case is a bunch of extras on disc, some of which are brand new.
War drama Paths of Glory, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas comes to 4K disc via Kino Lorber. David Krauss says this one is a "Must Own" release, who am I to argue that assessment?
LionsGate double-dips on Dirty Dancing which, in my opinion, a much better cover art than the previous Best Buy exclusive release.
Next week, another double-dip SteelBook but with a different cover, award winning anime, bloodsport, meow and more.
There are no blu-ray counterparts to the above 4K releases this week.
